WELCOME SUMMER ASSOCIATES:
MATTHEW SKARIN AND TAYLOR BOUCHARD

Matthew Skarin |

Taylor Bouchard |
Matthew Skarin and Taylor Bouchard survived an extremely
rigorous selection process to become FMBK's 2008 Summer Associates. The two were chosen
out of a pool of 140 applicants.
Matt is a third year law student at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, and Taylor is a
third year law student at Western New England College, School of Law. Both have been
working one-on-one with FMBK partners and attorneys to gain first-hand experience in the
world of Family Law, Probate Litigation, and Business Litigation.
This year's Summer Associate Program was designed by Partner Toni Acosta and Associate
Evan Okamura. Both Toni and Evan began their career at FMBK in the file center and worked
their way up through Law School. With this experience in mind, they wanted to create a
special training program for the Summer Associates, which includes: legal research, legal
writing, client interaction, and attending, mediations, trials, depositions, and court
appearances. In addition, the Summer Associates have a busy social calendar, including
attorney lunches and events. |

2. CHILDREN AND DIVORCE
Conflict & parenting: customize your post-separation parenting
relationship
When you go to the library or browse through a book store, there are many books for
divorcing parents, most of which have some version of the following message: "You
must communicate with the other parent for the children's sake, no matter how you feel
about him/her."

3. RELATIONSHIPS
Reinventing relationships
Your marital relationship is over, but what about your relationship with your in-laws,
their relationship with your children, or even your relationship with your ex-spouse's new
Significant Other? What is healthy and appropriate? Since no one has written the new rules
and codes of social conduct for relationships engendered by divorce, we asked some experts
to share their insights with us.

4. MEDIATION
Family-centered divorce
Divorce is never easy on a family, but the use of divorce mediation, rather than the
adversarial process, can enable divorcing couples to approach the divorce from a
family-centered perspective, making constructive plans for parenting after divorce.

5. HEALTH/WELL-BEING
Waiting for change
Each of us has an amazing facility to change our experience instantly simply by
altering our perception. Stop waiting for a miracle -- expect one.
